Sara Edwards, M.D.

Dr. Sara Edwards has been a specialist in sports medicine and complex shoulder arthroplasty since 2006. As of 2016 she joined Dr. Lesley Anderson in San Francisco at the Anderson Knee and Shoulder Center. She currently serves as a clinical instructor at the University of California San Francisco, teaches residents and takes care of US military veterans at the San Francisco Veteran’s Administration Hospital. She also is a team orthopaedic surgeon for the University of California Berkeley and takes care of the Golden Bears football and rugby teams. Prior to relocating to the Bay Area, she was an assistant professor at Northwestern University and the head team orthopaedic surgeon for the Northwestern University Wildcats in Chicago.

A native of Illinois, she received her undergraduate degree in Biology and Chemistry at the University of Illinois in Champaign. She attended medical school in Chicago at Northwestern University. She stayed at Northwestern University to complete her residency in orthopaedic surgery. She completed additional subspecialty training in shoulder arthroplasty and sports medicine at the Neer Shoulder and Sports Fellowship under Drs. Louis Bigliani and William Levine at Columbia University in New York City.

Dr. Edwards has published numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and written multiple book chapters on sports medicine, covering topics on shoulder instability, rotator cuff repair, anterior cruciate ligament injury, meniscal injuries and cartilage defects. She has been an invited lecturer both nationally and internationally. As a fellow, she won the ‘Aircast Award’ at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine for best clinical paper of the year for her work on Superior Labral (SLAP) tears in the shoulder. She currently is an active reviewer for the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, American Journal of Sports Medicine, and Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. She currently serves on the Shoulder and Elbow Committee for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery. She is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, American Shoulder and Elbow Society, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and Arthroscopy Association of North America. She is currently engaged in research looking at incidence and injury patterns in youth sports

Dr. Edwards treats patients of all ages and activity levels for sports medicine injuries and shoulder arthroplasty. She enjoys treating her patients, guiding them through the recovery process and seeing their success as they return to activity.
